Thermal’s guided adventures include:
Trips to iconic destinations
Oaxaca with Pablo Navarez

Situated at the base of the Sierra Madre mountain range, Oaxaca is a singular destination. The region is replete with unique scents, flavors and traditions, and the areas has yet to be heavily developed. For surfers, whether it’s Barra de la Cruz (the amazing righthand point break featured on the WSL World Tour), or the thumping beach breaks of Puerto Escondido (known as the Mexican Pipeline), or the dozens of famous righthand sand-bottomed points around Salina Cruz (like Punta Conejo and The Ranch), options abound for every level. Turning away from the sea, Oaxaca nurtures a vibrant local food scene, and the coffee fincas in the cool mountains and charming highland villages provide other adventures.
A guide who grew up on the wave folks dream about, Pablo Narvarez was bodysurfing at Barra de la Cruz until an Australian surfer gave him his first surfboard back in 1991. Now the most experienced guide in the region, Pablo knows every great point break on the Oaxacan coastline. He is a leader in environmental and conservation groups to protect the beaches and hatching sea turtles where he guides. Encouraging passengers to roll down the windows while cruising through villages in order to “truly smell, taste, and see the culture,” Pablo’s love for his home is both genuine and deeply infectious.

Hawaii with Jamie Sterling

The North Shore of Oahu has well-deserved reputation for some of the most exciting, challenging surf thanks to well-known waves like Pipeline, Sunset and Waimea. But the North Shore is not the exclusive preserve of fearless big wave surfers. Every level of surfer can find consistent breaks well-suited to their ability. Out the water, Oahu has a vibrant food and arts scene and tons of outdoor adventures. Led by Jamie Sterling, travelers will experience the world of North Shore surf.
Born and raised on the North Shore of Oahu, Jamie Sterling has been a waterman all his life. Jamie began his career as a professional big wave surfer at the age of 16, and his career highlights include winning the 2011 WSL Big Wave Championship. Jamie’s experience gives him the knowledge to teach travelers about Hawaii’s waves and surf culture. Jamie provides access to this North Shore surf community and enables travelers to fully experience this place.

Osa Peninsula with Maykol Espinoza

Owing to its position as one of Costa Rica’s most remote, off-grid destinations, the Osa Peninsula offers uncrowded, world-class waves and awe-inspiring natural history in equal measure. Home to Corcovado National Park, National Geographic referred to this area as "the most biologically intense place on Earth.”
Mayköl Espinoza is passionate about two things, surfing, and conservation. Mayköl has spent much of his life living off-grid on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica, observing and learning from the rich natural world in this region.

Barbados with Alan Burke

Deep in the Caribbean, nearly off the coast of South America, the large, teardrop-shaped island of Barbados is exposed to an ample amount of swell—on 3 different shorelines—all year long. Made famous by sessions 11X world champion Kelly Slater has had at Barbados’ premiere surf break, Soup Bowl, the vibrant island has dozens of other points, reefs and beach breaks to discover, with relatively mellow crowds and always warm water. The waves on Barbados aren’t only for experts either, as there’s many mellow, rolling breaks for beginners. “Bajan” culture on the island abounds—from Carnival to local cuisine—there’s a lot to experience on this former pirate island.
Born and raised in Barbados, like many generations of Burkes before him, Alan knows a thing or two about this Caribbean island he calls home. A former Barbados national surfing champion, Alan has been a surf school instructor and surf guide on the island for decades. His sons, Josh and Jake are current Barbadian pro surfers and compete around the world on the WSL Challenger series tour. Further proof of his talents as a guide, 11X world champion and friend Kelly Slater has stayed with Alan over the years to surf Soup Bowl.

Galapagos with Eddie Salazar

Not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the inspiration to Darwin’s theory of natural selection, the enchanted (and highly protected) Galapagos Islands is an iconic surf destination. With warm, deep blue water, a variety of epic reef breaks abound in this gorgeous archipelago off Ecuador, from world-class rights like Punta Carola to lefthand reef breaks like Loberia. Not only do the Galapagos get all the same swells that hit Hawaii (3 days later) year-round, but there’s various islands in the chain to catch them. The Galapagos are also so bio diverse that it’s literally not uncommon to be surfing a wave with two sea lions before pulling out next to a sea turtle.
A former Ecuadorian national surfing champion and diver who eventually organized the very first surf tours in the Galapagos back in 1999, Eddie Salazar has hard-earned knowledge of this island chain. Over 2,000 travelers have trusted Eddie to bring them into this world. Eddie’s knowledge of the surf, ecology, and community allow travelers to fully experience this place.

Baja with Matt Lindsay

Cabo blends Mexico’s cultural richness and warmth with a heightened level of sophistication and comfort, stemming from its long history as an international travel hotspot. Southern Baja’s rugged geography—featuring two distinct coastlines: the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean—creates the perfect location to surf year-round waves in perfect weather. World-class surf spots are found just a short 30-minute drive from the hustle and bustle of the tourist center. Picture 300 meter-long point breaks, few crowds, warm water, and one of the most beautiful drives in North America—where the desert meets the crystal blue Sea of Cortez. Cabo may be best known for its fishing, golf, and nightlife, but those seeking an authentic glimpse of Mexican life and solace on the water need not travel far to find what they are looking for.
Originally from Burleigh Heads, Australia, Matt Lindsay has spent his life traveling the globe with surfboards, board shorts and an insatiable sense of curiosity in tow. He has been a professional surf instructor for well over a decade, and finds joy in sharing his love of surfing. A testament to the allure of Southern Baja’s warm water and empty lineups, Matt decided to put down roots in Cabo San Lucas. He now spends his days living out his dream—surfing all morning, tacos on the beach for lunch, and an occasional off-road adventure in the afternoon.

Bali with Mega Semadhi

Touching down in Bali, Indonesia, aka “The Island of the Gods,” one immediately feels its distinct energy. The sweet smell of incense from the Hindu offerings, the thick equatorial air, the sight of volcanoes towering through the jungle, the sound of bells ringing melodically from distant temples… Of course, then there’s the surf. With regions like the Bukit holding seven world-class left-handers in a row—think: Uluwatu and Padang Padang—or cruiser zones like Canggu and Medewi up the west coast, to iconic right-handers like Keramas up the Eastside, it’s no wonder that Bali is frequented by surfers from all corners of the globe. This is the perfect hub for jumping off to nearby wave-rich neighbor islands like Lombok, Sumbawa and Java if dream waves like Desert Point or G-Land spark your fancy.
Balinese pro surfer and 2X Padang Padang Cup champion, Mega Semadhi is a born-and-bred local of the Bukit. Mega has been surf guiding since his childhood. His uncle Richie, another established Balinese surf guide, would let Mega tag along when leading trips. After briefly setting his sights on becoming a Hindu holy man, Mega is now solely focused on perfecting his craft as a competitive surfer and guide. Beyond being the most respected surfer in any lineup on the island, Mega poses a wealth of knowledge on Balinese history and lore.

Biarritz with Arnaud Darrigade

Just a few short hours from Paris lies a seaside town of dreams—fine wine, fresh seafood and a coastline with some of the best beach breaks on Earth. From the world-class wave of La Graviere, a fast, reeling barrel reserved for the more advanced surfer, to fun peaks up and down the coast, the town of Hossegor and nearby Biarritz more than justify their place among Europe’s premier surf spots. Coupled with the rich local gastronomy, viticulture and history, this corner of France will leave an impression on surfers and non-surfers alike.
Arnaud Darrigade has been surfing in France since he was 10 years old, learning from a young age to thread some of the most technical and punchy barrels in the world. Together, Arnaud’s career as a competitor and master's degree in Sports Science make him one of the most experienced coaches and surf guides in the region. In his spare time, Arnaud keeps busy training the next generation of local French competitive surfers.

J-Bay with Etienne Potgieter

Dotted with countless coastal towns from the cool waters of Cape Town to sub-tropical Durban, South Africa offers any surf adventure one can imagine. A wave-rich coastline facing two separate oceans provides an abundance of riches. Of this bunch, the righthand gems of J-Bay are South African surfing’s crown jewel. Beyond the waves, game reserves, renown vineyards, and adventure sports give travelers options to explore. The warm people and vast array of cultures found in the Rainbow Nation are the icing on the cake.
A former pro surfer, licensed airplane pilot and one-of-a-kind surf guide, South African Etienne Potgeiter has been doing missions through his home country and J-Bay for over a decade now. A childhood friend of surf celeb Craig Anderson, Etienne drove Ando through sand and fog in a 4X4 while filming Craig’s famous profile film Slow Dance. Having scoured the South African coastline in search of surf hundreds of times, Etienne’s intuition has been honed to maximize any swell sweeping by the Cape of Good Hope.

Morocco with Abs Yafi

A recent addition to the growing list of world-class surf destinations, Morocco is blessed with nearly year-round sun and a 1,100 miles of coastline. Morocco sits at the intersection of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and its vibrant culture is as varied and distinct as its geography. The coast offers an impressive array of waves: from easy-to-surf beach breaks perfect for beginners, through to rifling righthand point breaks reserved for those not faint of heart. Surfers have the privilege of seeing some of Morocco’s most unique and least-travelled areas, all in the name of finding great waves.
Abdelilah “Abs” Yafi, grew up north of Agadir, in the Moroccan fishing village—and now surfing hub—of Taghazout. Driven by his love of surfing and a dedication to his craft, Abs made his way from stoked local grom to surf instructor to seasoned surf guide. Today, he prides himself in helping surfers from around the world enjoy the best waves of their lives—whether it be a soft-top day at the local beachie, or a full-day off-road adventure to a never-before-surfed point break.

Skeleton Bay with Etienne Potgieter

A surf spot found on Google Earth as recently as 2008, the remote, wild, surfing world wonder known as Skeleton Bay only breaks half a dozen times each year. But when it does, the funneling, sand bottomed lefthanders of Skeleton Bay, Namibia are a sight to behold. Requiring a 4X4 adventure through sand and fog, past wild jackals and sea lions to access the treasure, base in the quaint Namibian town of Walvis Bay nearby before embarking on this surf mission of a lifetime. A wave for advanced surfers only.

Rio with Stephan Figueiredo

Just beyond the bossa nova music coming from the beachfront boardwalk dotted with delicious açai kiosks are dozens of surprisingly consistent and fun beach breaks in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The site of an annual WSL World Tour event, the nightlife, music and nature on land matches the fun had in the warm Atlantic. Just north and south of the “Marvelous City” are more surf towns sprinkled on coast with waves that accommodate every level of wave rider.
A former world-traveling pro surfer, big-wave rider, and well-respected Carioca (Rio de Janeiro local), Stephan Figueireido is one of the most seasoned surf guides in this iconic South American metropolis. Stephan offers surfers a chance to see beyond the postcard views and experience the fullness of this distinct destination. Whether it’s knowing the best local açai stand in Barra da Tijuca, to which sneaky reef break west of Rio is working on the right tide, or even how to explore epic outer islands in the RDJ state, Stephan has it all dialed.

Tahiti with Tahurai Henry

A stunning mix of French and Polynesian cultures, Tahiti has been luring poets and painters to visit (from Gauguin to Melville) for centuries, never to return home. With dozens of perfect, peeling reef passes to access, from the mighty Teahupoo lefthand tube to more playful beach breaks like Papara and Papenoo, surfers have been the newest tribe escaping to Tahiti every Southern Hemisphere season. More local, and with less resorts than nearby Bora Bora island, Tahiti island offers visitors a truly authentic Polynesian experience, a place that looks (as folks commonly say) like Hawaii—50 years ago.
Tahatian Tahurai Henry is a surfer and guide whose family has lived in front of one of the best left tubes on planet earth, Teahupoo, for generations. A former pro bodyboarder turned current sponsored pro surfer, Tahurai has spent his life exploring every reef pass on the island. With his local roots, Tahurai shares the full experience of this place - the unique breaks, the spectacular vistas, the fresh fish coming from the lagoon out front of his house.

Mentawais with Margi Apoek

Since the unspoiled Mentawai Islands of Indonesia came into our collective surf-consciousness in the 90s, the archipelago redefined “perfect surf.” A trip to the Ments has no rivals for wave quality and sweet escape. The real point of difference, though, is the Mentawai’s sheer remoteness and lack of development, in comparison to other parts of Indonesia like Bali. Looking in from the lineup, all one sees is dense, virgin jungle. Looking out, all one sees are lines of uncrowded waves.
Surf guide Margi Apoek was born and raised in the Mentawai Islands. Having spent his life guiding at many of the resorts and boats of the region, like Kandui Villas for example, Margi has spent decades surfing every wave in the Mentawais. With generations of ancestors in the archipelago, Margi also has a deep knowledge of traditional Mentawai culture and history.

Byron Bay with Luke Stedman

Nestled into the vast Australian bush and cozied up to the furthest eastern point of the continent, Byron Bay is home to some of the Australia’s best waves. From two-foot crystal clear peelers at The Pass, a longboarder’s heaven, to six-foot blue beachbreak barrels just over the headland, Byron Bay consistently delivers. Come from June through October and you can watch the whales migrate while sipping a freshly brewed “flat white” up at the iconic Lighthouse.
Former professional surfer, not to mention World #11 on the Championship Tour, Luke Stedman’s talent in the water needs no introduction. A Sydney-born surfer, Luke spent his life honing his skills on the world’s best waves – and has now settled into a health-focused and surf-centric existence in Byron Bay, Australia. A certified strength and mobility trainer, a world-class surf coach and a “man about town”, traveling with Luke is more than just getting great waves (though he of course delivers on that front) – it’s an immersive health experience and access to a local’s experience of the Aussie surf scene.

Long-time friends reconnect in Sayulita
Matt and Alex met 10 years ago as roomates at UCSB. Now living on opposite sides of the country, they hoped to reunite over their mutual love of surfing. Thermal created the trip of a lifetime for them in Mexico, alongside local guide and WSL announcer Kalle Carranza.
“Every surfer should have the pleasure of experiencing a surf trip like this. Kalle treated us like old friends. We surfed our brains out and gained a new appreciation for this special part of Mexico."
Despite so-so conditions, Kalle’s keen instincts led the crew to spots that provided ample waves and little congestion in the lineup.
“This was so much more than just a surf trip. Kalle’s kindness and generosity elevated our experience beyond our wildest expectations. We visited stretches of untouched coastline—free from crowds... the kinds of places we’d never find on our own.”

Family disconnects to reconnect in Oaxaca
As a Kauai native and veteran of the surf industry, Gabriel knows a thing or two about surf trips. Surfing brings his family together, and they wanted to explore an under-the-radar spot and immerse themselves in that place. Connecting with Thermal guide Pablo in Oaxaca, they scored and went deep on Oaxaca. Gabriel’s comment:
“Pablo is the man! Best dude, super knowledgeable and always helpful, cheerful and on time. Salt of the earth kind of human.”."
Pablo let them discover all that Oaxaca has to offer and make the most of their time together.
“The stars aligned for this trip, and Pablo helped us make the most of our time. We saw amazing swell, and Pablo set us up on the perfect breaks.”

Further together in Cabo
Shira and her husband Michael wanted to progress as surfers together. They were self-labeled intermediates and wanted an easy trip to the Baja Peninsula where they could make progress.. Thermal guide Matt Lindsay, who has decades of experience as a surf guide and deep roots in Cabo, maximize their time and helped them progress.
“Cannot rave about the trip enough. He showed us the best local surf spots and gave us killer tips to up our surfing game. We are so coming back and are stoked to have met a new friend. This well exceeded my expectations. EPIC.”
And Matt was more than just a guide in the water. Matt helped their feel comfortable and get a real sense of this unique place.
A true gentleman who took care to set up an umbrella and chairs along with snacks and a cooler for my wife. I give him a 10 out of 10 but only because 15 out of 10 is not an option.

Submersion and cultural immersion in the Galapagos
Kevin was between professional commitments and wanted to combine his love of surfing and sense of adventure. The Galapagos had been on his bucket list. Thermal guide Eddie Salazar, a retired Peruvian pro surfer, made him feel welcomed and showed him everything the Galapagos has to offer.
“On the Galapagos Islands, Eddie is somewhat of a surf “Mayor” I sensed. Every day, and for the week as a whole, he had a plan and was not rigid as swell conditions shifted. In the water, he was always looking out for me, guiding on where to sit, fostering friendly bonds with the locals, and putting my own time in the water above himself”
For Kevin, this trip was a peak moment:
“I’m grateful for you guys crossing my life with Eddie, and the memories I’ll have forever"
We are so coming back and are stoked to have met a new friend. This well exceeded my expectations.
There are surf guides and then there is Mega. I've been traveling for surf for many years and rarely found someone who guides with such a wholistic approach.
Pablo and Joaquin were amazing, they showed us the true spirit of Oaxaca and took us to surf perfect waves with no crowds.
It was even better than expected....Well organized and currently the best surf trip I've had in the past 10 years.
